Dental implants aren’t exactly a new technology but it has taken several decades for them to become a popular form of tooth replacement. In the past, a dental bridge was the best a dentist could do for you. At the very least you could do a stay-plate or flipper that would at least give the appearance of a tooth. These options while not to bad have become the “old” way to do things. Implants are the way of the future.
So, who cares if you are missing a tooth? I can’t tell you how many times I hear, “It doesn’t hurt me,” “It doesn’t bother me,” “My mom is missing a couple teeth and she’s alright,” … I mean these comments are mentioned daily in our office.
What’s the BIG DEAL?
An untreated missing tooth will cause further complications and additional tooth loss. Why? The jaw bone needs stimulation from chewing to grow. A missing tooth means no more growing bone. Bone that doesn’t grow doesn’t just not grow, it actually disappears! The jawbone will deteriorate surrounding that tooth causing the surrounding teeth to shift and fill in the gap left by the missing tooth. Over time, the teeth next to the missing tooth will be lost. This will create changes in the way you eat and the way you look.
The longer you put off replacing a missing tooth, the less options that you have. Keep in mind, when given the option to “save” a tooth for $2-$3,000, many people would rather pull a tooth out for $200. In the long run, replacing that missing tooth will lead to a lot of pain, un-comfortability, and more tooth loss.
